The meaning of lotus in spirituality

I derive a lot of inspiration from nature. Nature is an expression of the divine’s creativity.

Often times, we look at our past and the circumstances of our life that was less than perfect. We blame the present problems in our life and attribute the missed opportunities to those circumstances. I was no different. All my life, I grew up thinking that if I had been to a better school , things would have been better today. I would know what my talents were and I would be in a place where I enjoyed my work. And of course, my lack of leadership qualities is all because of my poor schooling.

If you had abusive parents while growing up, you would attribute your poor self image or lack of self confidence or being abusive yourself, to them. We all have some of these limiting beliefs which hinders our growth and keeps us stuck. In a way, we identify with our stories so much that we carry it with us wherever we go and those stories continue to manifest as our current reality. Well, first we need to become conscious that these are simply stories. Once we accept that, we can choose to release it.

The lotus depicts the purity and ability to go beyond the murky circumstances The Lotus flower blooms in muddy and murky waters. Yet, it is a very beautiful flower and highly venerated by eastern cultures. It is also a symbol of rebirth and spiritual enlightenment. Like the lotus, we can be rooted in the muddy circumstances,

yet be detached enough to not get affected by the ugliness of it. The lotus serves as a reminder that the difficult phases in your life serve as a pathway for your evolution and eventually you can blossom when you stay detached and don’t blame the circumstances of your life. What does the lotus represent to you?

I leave you with a quote by Buddha:‘ As a lotus flower is born in water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome the world, live unsoiled by the world’.
